BEST SURVIVAL PREP MAY BE FROM YOUR DENTIST

Other GIMers have posted about going to the dentist. I just spent $980 getting one crown and the usual cleaning. The tooth just cracked next to an old filling while eating a sandwich. Dentist scheduled me in the next day. No pain. No complaints. Paid cash.

I think getting our teeth in top shape is the best investment anyone can make in Survival Preps. Just imagine wtshtf and dentists are unavailable. Imagine a toothache nagging at you day in and day out. Those Leatherman Tool pliers in your bugout bag might be all you have then.

:wavey: just a friendly reminder

I've been putting that off for quite some time. I've got two teeth that have self destructed over the last year, but since they aren't painfull I've just been letting it ride. And since they are both in the same side, I've got one good side that I can still eat with!

You know it's funny they always talk about rotten teeth infecting your blood an heart, and these guys look like they're 60 years old. Then again they might be 30 by Bosnian standards, but still. I asked the dentist about my tooth, and he said they don't use amalgam anymore. I asked him why, and he said, "They just don't do it anymore". Great. But yeah, your teeth are the best tools you have, I've got a 26 ga hole in my teeth I can use to strip wire, I'd be heartbroken without them.

I spend 15 minutes cleaning my mouth after each meal but it sure beats working the same amount to pay a dentist.

They don't use amalgam anymore due to all the complaints about mercury content, unsightly discolouration etc. and fillings that fall out.

I have had most of mine removed (drilled out with a high-speed drill with a rubber dental dam thing they use to stop you swallowing any of the old amalgam as they remove it. I only have about 3 or 4 teeth with it left, which I hope to also have removed next year or so. As unpleasant as visiting the dentist is, I was really happy to have those taken out.

Nowadays they use something they call "comp" which is far easier for them to work with than amalgam anyway. This is composite, which consists of a plastic based substance which hardens when a strong UV light source is shone on it. It also has a colour which is very similar to your natural tooth enamel. Comp can also have quartz and other things added to give it much more wearability, particularly on molars or strong biting teeth.

It is incredibly strong stuff when you consider the amount of pressure per square inch you are able to exert on your teeth and the grinding actions of eating tough foods.

Having amalgam removed and replaced with comp can be quite expensive, luckily we have a friend of the family who is a skilled dentist, and he gave me a great deal on having all the work. About $1000 worth. Normally probably twice that.
